A hatchling we have (hatched 17th may) has stopped eating. It ate the first two times without any problems. It has only been handled gently and quickly a couple of times weekly when cleaning its enclosure. I have checked its enclosure has a thermal gradient, it is kept in our bedroom away from any disturbance and in a quiet corner, its penpal is covered on 3 sides to give extra security ( I do this with all of my young snakes) and it has the usual hide and fresh water with paper towel substrate. We have tried wiggling the pinkie and it goes in the opposite direction, gently tapping the hatchling with the pinkie has no effect, weve tried braining and splitting the stomach. We have also covered the enclosure over to give it extra security. There have been no signs that it is about to shed, it only shed a couple of weeks ago anyway. Weve also tried putting the pinkie in warm water for a few seconds, and have used forceps to handle it. We are thinking of transfering it to a cricket tub tonight with a new pinkie to see if this works as a friend of ours uses this method and it works for her. Come the weekend we will ask someone to supervise us with assisted feeding if we have no luck. any tips anyone?

In my experience I have found that the first clutch of eggs from a young adult snake can contain a number of hatchlings that are very reluctant to feed. Why this should be, I don't know. I agree that the snake should be kept in a cricket carton as a pet-pal will be too big for it to feel secure. You have tried everything that I would suggest. However, I have read that if you put the snake and a pinkie in a sealed paper bag (in the cricket box) this can stimulate feeding. Obviously make sure the snake can breathe. The only other thing I can recommend is don't panic. It's fed twice so the odds are that it will resume feeding when it's ready, just make sure it has fresh water. I have a jungle carpet python that hatched last June (2003) that has only fed about three times. Incredibly it is still with us and I haven't given up on it yet! This reply is from my dad as, as you know I don't keep any snakes (yet!). Hope this helps

Hiya Jackie(and dad) The ghost hatchling has eventually fed on the 18th. As a result of youre post Ive put all of my new hatchlings in cricket tubs to see if it prevents them from stopping feeding. Thanks for youre advice.

Well its refused to feed since then, but its just gone milky so we will give time to shed before trying again. Heres a photo of the anorexic hatchling
