We noiced an area on our python where the scales looked rough and different so took it to see Lauren/Uroplatus today, as she has loads of experience with reptiles. She thinks it may have the start of scale rot and applied some Tamodine for us. I thought I would use this as a positive learning experience and take photos so others may learn aswell. I will take photos later this evening and post them if they show the affected areas(on further very close inspection it has two small areas ). She has advised us to try to keep it dry. I will try to read up more on this problem and post further info about it in the snake health area over the next couple of days. I will post updates on the python on here. I would greatly appreciate other peoples experiences posted in the health section, to help me and others learn.

I had a similar thing on my femal bullsnake when she came out of brumation this Feb. I cleaned the areas with warm water, dried and applied tea tree oil to the areas every other day. It was all but cleared up in a week. After the week I changed to pure aloe vera gel twice a week until she shed. Everything was okay and she has been fine and as feisty as always. She was then taken to the vets(JP) during this time and told to keep doing what I was as it was working well. I applied the AV simply by rubbing some on my hands and letting her run through them for a while till it was rubbed in. All the time she was being treated she was in a clean viv on newspaper. Hope this helps. John

Thanks John Thats very helpful. Ive read a good bit of info from a book on boas last night and from description it sounds more like bacterial dermatitis than necrotic dermatitis. Either way Im still taking it to the vets. Im just glad I asked Laurens opinion as she has pointed me in the right direction after seeing the snake. lets just hope its caught early and the snake wont suffer.

Forgot to ask, would you dilute the tea tree oil in vegetable oil as I know when using on our skins it needs diluting as it can burn. Its a good anti bacterial. Ive got an aloe vera plant so I could you pure aloe vera which is so much better than preparations. Apparently when you add aloe vera to various preparations/dilutents it loses its potency.

No I just use the Tea tree oil straight from the bottle and have had very good results with it for external bacterial problems. only use the oil not the creams as the carrier is usually alcohol which is a no no for reptiles. I also use Aloe vera direct from the plant it is especially good for burns. The sommercial preperations are good as long as you get the pure with nothing added especially perfumes.

It shed today and the skin is looking healthy so I cancelled the appointment. The scales still look a little smaller than the surrounding scales, but there is no sign of inflamation. Im quite happy that whatever it was it has improved, so Im not worried. I will post photos shortly of it post shed, its so beatiful.
