Well I work in a pet shop at the moment (students need all the money they can get!) But in the future I hope to become a vet. I suppose my major occupation is m studies at the moment, I am doing 4 A-levels and picking up another next year. My current subjects are Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths. Next year I am taking Critical Thinking as Universtities think of this highly.

any tips for the induction? I have to go to an induction on Thursday- what is it? I am also meant to bring uniform sizes, NI number and bank details....the staff seem friendly there so I hope it will be a nice place to work ;D..

Induction is just where you learn all basic stuff about youre new job. You usually get shown around, told about fire policy, health and safety, whos who, company directives & plans, sickness and absence discussion , then they would go through youre responsabilities and training. Its a good time to ask questions. Good luck with it

Well Angi pretty much summed it up there, you have to fill out loads of forms at the end. In my store we are currently changing uniforms so you might be lucky and not have to wear the green and yellow one at all. They go through all the 'how to clean out the animals' bit once you work on a morning. Ususally the main clean out is on a sunday morning but all the animals are spot cleaned every morning. Good luck with it Helen, tell us how it goes on Thursday.

thanks, Angi and Jimmy- never had a job before so all new to this, lol I am going to be working Saturday 11.20am-6.15pm and Sunday 10.20am-5.00pm, the only problem I have is that I am helping out at the EAWT on the last weekend in May (the bank holiday weekend) do you reckon they will give me time off as I had it arranged before I got the job? I hope I like it there- the first few months will be tough, but once I know what I am doing it shouldn't be too bad will keep you updated on how it goes!

If it had been arranged prior to you getting the job then they should let you have it off. I would mention it on your induction just to make them aware of it. The first few months are always the hardest but once you know where everything is its a doddle! Good luck

thanks, Jimmy- least I can get tips off you then ;D they seem to be incredibly customer-focused- at the interview they told me about ratings, etc and mystery shoppers, etc- they said their store didn't get a good rating, but I am not sure why...

If you ever read a mystery shopper report you will see why. They are professional nit-pickers and pick holes in everything. This month we had a really good report (96% acheived in total) so we had a bonus of £1300 to share between the staff. I will have a look in the Pets at Home 'magazine' and see where your store rates. We where really low a while ago but things are definately improving.

So theres going to be a bit of friendly competition between you two now Helen, I would definately look ahead to see other times you will not be able to work, then tell them you already have very important arrangements( you dont have to tell them exactly what). They may respect you more for the truth and loyalty you show to the eawt. its always best to let them know about thses things on youre first day/induction. Maybe they would count it has holiday, although a lot of places prefer you to work 3-6 months before you take a holiday. Just stand youre ground and tell them you cannot work that weekend, but nicely. Most people have 1 or 2 commitments made when they start a new job, and employers are generally understanding. I would think they are chuffed to bits having someone with such a specilised interest in reptiles working with them. Good luck

thanks for the tips, Jimmy and Angi- will let them know on Thursday and hope they will understand, after all they told me a week after they were meant to that I had got the job so I wasn't expecting to get it ;D the other times I can't work are the 18th and 19th of September as I am hopefully going on an advanced handling and venomous snakes course with the Trust then..
