our next door neighbours have a 6 month old puppy (labrador X german shepherd) (called Holly) that they leave outside all day- I feel so sorry for it as it whines and barks and howls all day until the owners come home, and then they shut it in a room all night on its own so it howls all night then- which means Steven and I can't get any sleep. I feel so sorry for it as it sounds so scared and upset that its on its own. I am not sure what to do- I don't want to confront them in case they hurt our animals, and the RSPCA don't have any powers of entry- I am tempted to call the police, but then it will be obvious it is me that called as we are the only ones that can see the dog- what do I do?

Try writing them a letter, that way you can word things nice and diplomatically. Explain how it affects youre sleep etc. I wouldnt mention contacting the police or anything just yet. I would give them a reasonable chance to come up with some sort of soloution. Poor little thing doesnt sound as if it has a very happy life if it is constantly howling. Best of luck Angi

thanks, Angi- trouble is I don't know what the neighbours are likeas I have never met them- they could be really aggressive and abusive, or take offence easily and I don't want them harming our animals

Maybe if you try contacting the RSPCA they can talk to them. Although they have no right of entry they can have a word with them about not leaving the dog outside in cold weather. You could ring them in confidence and say you walk to work and everyday you hear the dog whining. That way your neighbours won't know it was you and it could be sorted. I don't know if it would work but it must be worth a try?

I contwacted the RSPCA and they said that its perectly alright to leave a dog outside, s long as it has some form of shelter- grr, bloddy rspca.
Anyway, an update, which will hopefully end in good news: Well, it has been left outside today- and it was raining so the poor thing is whining, crying and shivering outside
Although- one hopeful piece of news- it jumped up on our wall, and I went outside to give it a bit of love and attention and I looked on its tag and noticed the 'Dog's Trust' logo on it, and I know that the Dogs Trutst rarely rehome puppies to outdoor homes so if it is being left outside then its contravenes their terms of adoption.
SO anyway, I gave them a ring and explained to situation and that I saw the tag, and they told me that they also give the tags out to people who have had their dogs microchipped with them, but they said that it is highly likely the dog was rehomed with them, so I gave them the address and they are going to see if the person did rehome Holly with them, and if so they will do a 'random' house visit to check the dog is ok.
They won't mention my name or that a complaint has been made, so hopefully it means that Holly will have a bit of hope, as the Dogs Trust can any dog they have rehomed away if they feel it isn't being cared for properly, or being neglected.
fingers crossed!

Well done Helen, I hope they come around soon, the weather is supposed to get a bit colder next week. Hope you get things sorted out. Do you know any policemen who might just pop by and give them a little chatting to? Angi

Helen, You need to contact the local dog warden; they have more powers than the RSPCA, who actually don't want to know. The Cleveland county Dog warden has a lot more powers than the RSPCA. Let them know what is happening and they will call round to your neighbours and have a talk with them to see if they need any training or advice. If after that they feel it necessary they will take the animal away.

Im glad youre problem is sorted, more or less anyway. I hope the puppy is better catered for in its new home, maybe that is why they are moving. Angi
